چکیده

This paper proposes a formalism for nonmonotonic reasoning based on prioritized argumentation. We argue that nonmonotonic reasoning in general can be viewed as selecting monotonic inferences by a simple notion of priority among inference rules. More importantly, these types of constrained inferences can be speciied in a knowledge representation language where a theory consists of a collection of rules of rst order formulas and a priority among these rules. We recast default reasoning as a form of prioritized argumentation, and illustrate how the parameterized formulation of priority may be used to allow various extensions and modiications to default reasoning. We also show that it is possible, but more diicult, to express prioritized argumentation by default logic: even some particular forms of prioritized argumentation cannot be represented modularly by defaults under the same language.

Prioritized Norms in Formal Argumentation

To resolve conflicts among norms, various nonmonotonic formalisms can be used to perform prioritized normative reasoning. Meanwhile, formal argumentation provides a way to represent nonmonotonic logics. In this paper, we propose a representation of prioritized normative reasoning by argumentation. Using hierarchical abstract normative systems, we define three kinds of prioritized normative reas...

Preference-Based Argumentation Handling Dynamic Preferences Built on Prioritized Logic Programming

To treat dynamic preferences correctly is crucially required in the fields of argumentation as well as nonmonotonic reasoning. To meet such requirements, first, we propose a hierarchical Prioritized Logic Program (or a hierarchical PLP, for short), which enhances the formalism of Sakama and Inoue’s PLP so that it can represent and reason about dynamic preferences. Second, using such a hierarchi...

Nonmonotonic Reasoning, Argumentation and Machine Learning

Machine learning and nonmonotonic reasoning are closely related, both concerned with making plausible as well as certain inferences based on available data. In this document a brief overview of diierent approaches to nonmonotonic reasoning is presented , and it is shown how the concept of argumentation systems arises. The relationship with machine learning work is also discussed. The document a...

Formalizing a Switch of Burden of Proof by Logic Programming

Prakken [2] argues that we cannot formalize a switch of burden of proof in legal reasoning either by argumentation framework or by nonmonotonic reasoning since argumentation semantics can represent any nonmonotonic formalism. In this paper, we argue that a switch of burden of proof can be formalized in nonmonotonic reasoning by formalizing burden of proof in a different way followed by the Japa...

Argumentation for Propositional Logic and Nonmonotonic Reasoning

Argumentation has played a significant role in understanding and unifying under a common framework different forms of defeasible reasoning in AI. Argumentation is also close to the original inception of logic as a framework for formalizing human argumentation and debate. In this context, the purpose of this paper is twofold: to draw a formal connection between argumentation and classical reason...
